Philipp Jacob Breitling was born on 16 March 1848 at Beresina, Bessarabia, Russia.2 He was the son of Mathaus Breitling and Dorothea Fredrich.1 Philipp Jacob Breitling married, at age 20, Karolina Strobel, age 19, daughter of Martin Strobel and Christine Barbara Hahn, on Saturday, 31 October 1868 at Russian Empire.2 Philipp Jacob Breitling died on 3 March 1919 at North Dakota at age 70 years, 11 months and 15 days.2
He and Karolina Strobel emigrated on 9 June 1889 from Beresina, Bessarabia, Russia, America and settled, first in Scotland, South Dakota.3 His obituary was published on 19 March 1919 in the Dakota Freie Presse, printed in North Dakota. His obituary stated:
Once again, inflexible death has taken away one of our old fellow citizens. Our Phillip Breitling. He was born March 16, 1847 in the colony of Beresina, South Russia. In 1868 he married Caroline Strobel. He came with his family to America on June 9, 1889 and settled, first in Scotland, South Dakota. However, after a few years he left for the state of Colorado. There he stayed only a short time and was drawn back to North Dakota for additional years. He stayed in Mercer County, North Dakota 10 years then traveled to the state of Nebraska. After living there for 9 years, he came back to North Dakota in 1917. He wanted to spend his old age with his children.
The beginning of 1919, Phillip suffered a stroke. He was recovering from this affliction, but soon another attack followed, parpayzing his entire left side. From then on he depended on the help of others. Patiently resigned to his misfortune and knowing the his end was not too distant. Yet it was delayed and only on March 3rd at 9pm did God free him from his suffering and he was carried to his final rest.
The attendance at his funeral was large. Paster A. Kelpe conducted the service and delivered the funeral address based on Psalm 23 v. l. The deceased reached an age of 71 years, 11 mos, & 18 days. Surviving him are his wife, 10 children, 49 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. There had been 13 children in the family.
He was a very popular personality. May he rest in peace until God raise him in the last days. ~Written by Friedrich Adolf, Sr.3
