Thomas Mahaffey1,2,3,4

     Thomas Mahaffey was born on 20 August 1833 at Loyalsock Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.5,3,4 He was the son of William Mahaffey and Susan Bowers.3 Thomas Mahaffey married Elizabeth B. Sholder, daughter of Christian August Scholderer and Anna Margareta Lutscher, in 1854.6,1,3,4
     Thomas Mahaffey was a farmer in 1860 at Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.7

Thomas Mahaffey was listed as the head of household in the Eighth Census for the United States of America, enumerated on 28 July 1860 in the State of Pennsylvania, Lycoming County, Old Lycoming Township as "Thos Mehaffey," a white male age 27 with an occupation of a farmer, being born in Pennsylvania; his real estate was valued at $150, the equivalent of $3,060 in the year 2000 and his personal property was valued at $150, the equivalent of $3,060 in the year 2000. We find Elizabeth B. Sholder resided in the same household, as "Eliz W. Mehaffey" age 27 being born in Pennsylvania; as did Emeline Mahaffey, as "Emeline" age 4 born in Pennsylvania; and Edward August Mahaffey, age 2 born in Pennsylvania.8 Thomas Mahaffey was the Sheriff for Lycoming County, Pennsylvania circa 1875.4 He and Elizabeth B. Sholder appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 at Hughesville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Mahaffey was the sheriff of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania between 1892 and 1895.9 Messrs. A. E. Campbell, A. B. Kilmer, R. S. and W. H. Fanning, Ed Shepard, S. U. Morgan, A. F. Lette and wife, and Joe Porter, all of Shunk, were in Dushore on the 18th inst., to attend the suit of MAHAFFEY vs. LETTS before Squire Lawrence. The case arose from the fact that Ex-Sheriff Mahaffey had sued A. F. Letts for trespass for building a barn out of lumber that had been levied on under due process of law.10 Trial List:

The Silver Spring Quarry Co. vs Geo. C. Jackson: No. 10, May term, 1896 - Appeal.10 He and Elizabeth B. Sholder appeared on the census of 2 July 1900 at New Albany, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Mahaffey and Elizabeth B. Sholder appeared on the census of 3 May 1910 at Lycoming Street, Old Lycoming Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Mahaffey appears in family portrait on 24 August 1912.

Thomas was fortunate being able submit a brief record of his family to authors Estelle Kinports Davis and Mary E. Mahaffey Carst for inclusion in the "Mahaffey Descendants 1600-1914, Sketch of Reunions, Historical Records and Biographical Genealogy of Mahaffey Descendants" published in 1914.      Thomas Mahaffey, fifth child of William and Susan Bower Mahaffey, was born August 20, 1833, married 1854 to Elizabeth B. Sholder, who was born in 1833. They lived in Newberry, Lycoming County, PA. Thomas Mahaffey has been sheriff of Lycoming and Sullivan counties. To this union was born eight children.4 He became a widower at the age of 82 with the death of Elizabeth on 14 June 1916. Thomas Mahaffey appeared on the census of 3 January 1920 in the household of Irvin Hafer and Esther Ann Hoffa at Williamsport, 7th Ward, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
