Her obituary was published on 9 November 2001 Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Her obituary stated:

Harriet Scholder Goldberg, 75, a professor of Spanish literature at Villanova University for 30 years, died of cancer Saturday at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park. She had lived in Swarthmore since 1960.

Mrs. Goldberg, who specialized in medieval Spanish literature, had taken a leave of absence from teaching this semester because of her illness but hoped to teach a new undergraduate course on Spanish ballads in the spring semester.

She was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and earned her undergraduate degree from City College of New York.

In 1945, she married Joseph Goldberg. She had studied Spanish in college and kept up her fluency with a Spanish conversation group while her four children were young.

When her youngest child was 6, Mrs. Goldberg returned to school, earning her master's degree from Villanova in 1968 and her doctoral degree in Spanish literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971.

"She was a wonderful mother, juggling her schoolwork with our schedules," her daughter Joan said.

Mrs. Goldberg was a prolific researcher who wrote four books and published many articles. A colleague in the language department at Villanova, Carmen Peraita, said Mrs. Goldberg's work as a Spanish medievalist was internationally known.

"When I was considering taking a position at Villanova, I knew nothing about the school but I knew of Harriet's scholarship, and I came here because of her and I considered her my mentor," Peraita said.

In academia, Peraita said, "Harriet was unique. She published often, but she was very involved with teaching. She was concerned about her students and especially wanted contact with undergrads." Peraita said Mrs. Goldberg's areas of expertise included medieval Spanish folklore and oral traditions.

Mrs. Goldberg's work will be honored at a seminar in the spring during a conference for medieval scholars in Kalamazoo, Mich.

She was active in the League of Women Voters and served on the board of the Swarthmore Public Library.

Besides her husband and daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Laura Lape; sons, Richard and Robert; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Friends Meeting House at 12 Whittier Place in Swarthmore. Burial was private.
