Martin Sauter1

M, (27 July 1822 - 17 February 1873)
     Martin Sauter was born on 27 July 1822 at Weilheim, Oberamt Balingen, Schwarzwaldkreis, Württemberg.1 He was the son of Johan Martin Sauter and Regina Dorothea Scholderer.1 Martin Sauter married Barbara Haigis, daughter of John Haigis and Rebecca Jenter, in 1850 at Weilheim, Oberamt Balingen, Schwarzwaldkreis, Württemberg.1 Martin Sauter died on 17 February 1873 at Deerfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, at age 50 years, 6 months and 21 days.1 He was buried on 19 February 1873 in the Green River Cemetery, located in Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts.1
     His obituary was published on 24 February 1873 in the The Greenfield Gazette and Courier, printed in Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts. His obituary stated:

     Sauter, Martin, age 50, died in Deerfield Feb. 17. One of our German citizens, who has resided here for 23 years, named Martin Sauter, died of consumption Mon. night, at the age of 50 years. His funeral, on Wed. aft., was attended, besides his relatives and friends, by the Turn Verein, of which body he had been a member, their colors being draped in black. The President of the Turn Verein spoke at length at his grave of the good qualities of the deceased. Mr. Sauter leaves a widow and 8 children, who through his industrious habits are left in easy circumstances.1
