Esther Wein1,2

     Esther Wein was born on 12 April 1901 at Butler, Day County, South Dakota.1,2 She was the daughter of Christian Stephan Wein and Emma Linck.1 Esther Wein married, at age 20, Rex Batie, age 21, son of Frank Albert Batie, on Wednesday, 18 January 1922.1 Esther Wein and Rex Batie were divorced in 1940.1 Esther Wein died on 22 June 1968 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, at age 67 years, 2 months and 10 days.1,2 She was buried on 25 June 1968 in the Prarie Mound Cemetery, located in Butler, Day County, South Dakota. The funeral service was officiated by Tyler Kriedeman.1
     Her obituary was published sometime in June 1968 in the local paper, printed in Webster, Day County, South Dakota. Her obituary stated:

     Esther Wein Batie passed away unexpectedly June 22, 1968 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

     She was born April 12, 1901 to Emma and Christian Wein in Butler and was baptized and confirmed at the Butler Methodist Church. She attended school in the Butler and Bristol area. On January 18, 1922 she was united in marriage to Rex Batie. To this union were born four children: LaVern of Webster, Margie [Mrs. Donald Bloom], Waubay, Doris [Mrs. Andrew Sampson] and Connie [Mrs. James Herrick] both of Sioux Falls.

     She was a Day County Resident for many years, and was in the cafe and grocery business in Butler and Webster until moving to Sioux Falls in 1961. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Royal Neighbors of America and the Rebecca Lodge.

     Funeral services were held on June 25 at the Methodist Church in Webster with Reverend Tyler Kriedeman officiating. Interment was in the Prairie Mound Cemetery at Butler. Pall bearers were Gail Wein, Larry Wein, Jay Wein, Lindy Markve, Rolfe Ludtke and Paul Micheal.

     Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother Julius. Left to mourn are her children, 15 grandchildren, two sisters Rosa Schmidt and Ida [Mrs. Marvin Ludtke] both of Webster, and four brothers, William of Seattle, Wash; Henry of Garden City; Ed C. [Kelly] of Webster, and Adolf of Butler. Also several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

     Unable to attend the service were three grandsons Ronald Batie, attending the University of Hawaii, Donnie Bloom, serving in the Army at Fort Gordon, GA, and Fielding Sampson, serving in the Navy in San Diego, CA.1
