Pauline Zuvich Scholder died Friday, April 22, 2005 at her home in Crown Point in the loving company of family members. She was 82 years old. Paulie was born June 29, 1922 in Elma, Washington. She was the 11th of 12 children of Daniel and Katie Zuvich, who immigrated to the United States from Croatia in the early 1900s. The family moved from Strawberry Hill in Elma to a farm in the Mox Chehalis Valley nearby. Paulie graduated from Elma High School in 1940. She attended the Western Washington School of Education in Bellingham, Washington for a year, then moved to Seattle to work in a secretarial capacity at the Naval Air Station. In 1942 Paulie moved to San Diego and worked at Consolidated Vultee, where airplane engines were constructed as part of the war effort.
There she met Ed Scholder whom she married on October 4, 1942. After spending about a year living in Washington, where their first child was born, Paulie and Ed moved back to San Diego in February, 1944. Living first in Linda Vista and then in Pacific Beach, they purchased a home in Crown Point in 1951 and resided there for the rest of their lives. Paulie and Ed had 12 children, some of whom attended grade school at St. Brigid's Catholic Church, and many of whom attended Crown Point Elementary and Mission Bay High School.
Paulie earned a degree in Sociology from San Diego State University in the late 1970s. A devoted member of the Catholic Church, she spent many years as a volunteer in various capacities with the North Shores Catholic Woman's Club and the Matrons of Charity. She later worked at the Cardine Center. She was also a member of the Pacific Beach Woman's Club.
Paulie took great joy in her children and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and in the past year became a great-great-grandmother. In addition to raising their many progeny, no child was ever a "stranger" to Paulie and Ed - one more at the table or snuggled on a couch or cot was always welcome. As her own children were leaving the nest, Paulie worked as a nanny for several families in the San Diego area. A fabulous cook and competent seamstress, Paulie also enjoyed reading and was an avid Padre's fan.
Paulie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Ed, grandchildren Milo Waddell and Krishna Marie Nieder, sons-in-law James Nieder and Jerry Jahries, and 10 of her 11 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sister Katie Cole of Sequim, Wash., her twelve children - Gloria Nickerson, Shonnie Emerson, Daniel Scholder, Carol Waddell, Diana Nieder, David Scholder, Donna Robinson, Mary Akerstein, Patty Stika, Gary Scholder, Sandi Jahries, and John Scholder and their spouses; 35 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Apri1 29, at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Crown Point. A Rosary and Viewing will be held at 10:30 a.m. preceding the Funeral. Burial will follow at El Camino Memorial Park.
