     Mary Louise Alter was born on 5 December 1937 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.3 She was the daughter of Edwin L. Alter and Margaret L. Powell.3 Mary Louise Alter married, at age 18, Norman E. Kelchner, age 24, son of William Roy Kelchner and Della May Sholder, on Monday, 30 July 1956.2,3 Mary Louise Alter died on 31 July 2022 at Valley View Nursing Center, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 84 years, 7 months and 26 days.3 She was buried on 6 August 2022 in the Wildwood Cemetery, located in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.3
     Mary Louise Alter was also known as Mary Lou.3 As of 1996, Mary Louise Alter and Norman E. Kelchner lived at 1123 Park Avenue, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.2

     The former Mary Louise Alter was listed in Norman E. Kelchner's obituary on 7 October 1998 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, as his wife.2

     The obituary dated on 19 August 2006 for Thomas Allen Kelchner from Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, listed Mary Louise Alter as his mother.1 Her obituary was published on 2 August 2022 Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Her obituary stated:

     Mary Louise “Mary Lou” Kelchner, 84, of Williamsport passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Valley View Rehab and Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Norman E. Kelchner in 1998.

Born Dec. 5, 1937, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of the late Edwin L. and Margaret L. (Powell) Alter.

Mary Lou was the owner of Kelchner’s Cleaning Service. She was a devoted member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and loved attending whenever she could. Mary Lou enjoyed cooking, and was known for her famous macaroni and cheese recipe. In her down time, Mary Lou relaxed by kicking back and watching television.

Surviving are four children, Norman E. Kelchner (Debbie) of Muncy Valley, Steve S. Kelchner (Bobbie Jo) of Turbotville, David M. Kelchner (Linda) of Williamsport, and Melissa S. Haas (Chris) of Williamsport; nine grandchildren, Emily, Randy, Emma, Miranda, Aaron, Elliott, Madie, Ethan, and Meghen (Josiah); and four great-grandchildren, Aubree, Mackenzie, Paisley, and Hudson.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas A. Kelchner, and her sister, Shirley M. Francis.

A funeral service to honor the life of Mary Lou will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at Knight-Confer Funeral Home 1914 Memorial Ave., Williamsport. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at Knight-Confer Funeral Home.
