     Ruth Irene Newhouse was born on 16 December 1909 at Altamont, Labette County, Kansas.3,1,2 She was the daughter of Charles Darwin Newhouse and Clara Belle Scholder.1 Ruth Irene Newhouse married Claude J. Burton in 1934.1 Ruth Irene Newhouse died on 11 September 2003 at Westminster Healthcare Center, Austin, Travis County, Texas, at age 93 years, 8 months and 26 days.1,2 She was buried on 17 September 2003 in the Restland Memorial Park, located in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.1
     She appeared on the census of 18 April 1910 in the household of Charles Darwin Newhouse and Clara Belle Scholder at Mount Pleasant, Labette County, Kansas. Ruth Irene Newhouse appeared on the census of 7 January 1920 in the household of Charles Darwin Newhouse and Clara Belle Scholder at Eagle Rock, Los Angeles County, California. Ruth Irene Newhouse appeared on the census of 22 April 1930 in the household of Charles Darwin Newhouse and Clara Belle Scholder at Kuna, Ada County, Idaho. Her obituary was published on 14 September 2003 in the Dallas Morning News, printed in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. Her obituary stated:

     BURTON, RUTH, a resident of Highland Park and Dallas for over 60 years, died at the Westminster Healthcare Center in Austin on September 11, 2003. She was 93.

     Born Ruth Irene Newhouse, daughter of Charles and Clara Newhouse, on December 16, 1909, in Kansas, she grew up in Idaho and California.

     Ruth graduated summa cum laude from the University of Idaho at age 20 where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Sigma Alpha Iota. She then attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where she received a graduate degree in violin. After returning to Idaho, she taught school briefly and met Claude Burton, a Texas businessman. They were married in 1934, and moved to Dallas.

     In her early years in Dallas, Ruth played the violin in the Dallas Symphony under Antal Dorati. A member of the Dallas Musical Arts Club and the Dallas Music Study Club, she remained an active musician in Dallas for many decades, performing chamber music and in various orchestras throughout Texas. She was a lifelong supporter of the arts in Dallas, serving as an officer and on the boards of the Dallas Civic Music Association, the Dallas Symphony League and the Dallas Metropolitan Opera Association.

     Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Claude, sister Lucille Newhouse and brother, Robert Newhouse.

     She is survived by daughters Jane Burton of Oakland, California, Nancy Garrett of Austin, and Carolyn Burton and son-in-law John Parton of Cullowhee, North Carolina; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; and nephews Neal Newhouse and Gary Newhouse and wife Gretchen. Memorial services will be held at the Highland Park Methodist Church Cox Chapel at 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 17th, preceded by internment at Restland Memorial Park.1
According to the Social Security Administrations Death Index Ruth's last known residence was Austin, Travis County, Texas.2
