Thomas was born in Keensburg, CO in 1926. He moved to San Diego in the 1940's and graduated from High School. He served as an Army Paratrooper during WWII then graduated from SDSU as an Electronics Engineer. He met and married Nancy Gray in 1949. They designed and built their own home in La Mesa where they lived and raised four children for 56 years. Tom is survived by his wife Nancy and four children, son John (and wife Toni) of Winlock, WA, daughter Martha of Hemet, CA, son James of La Mesa, and daughter Myra (and husband John Weldon) of Escondido, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He had two sisters and one brother that predeceased him.
Tom worked at Convair (also known as Consolidated Vultee Aircraft, then General Dynamics Electronics, then BAE Systems) for 47 years retiring in 1998. His career ranged from electrician to Program Director. He worked with Werner Von Braun in Cape Kennedy and was in the blockhouse when the first successful Redstone Missile was launched. He worked on the guidance system for those missiles and also worked on the GLOTRAC program that established radar tracking around the world, as well as many other military programs (AZUSA, Apollo, ARMS).
Tom was first and foremost a Christian and a man of faith. He belonged to Trinity Presbyterian Church for 55 years and had a heart for Evangelism serving as Deacon, Elder, and Chairman of the Building and Grounds. He dedicated over three years as a Missionary to the poor in Tijuana, moving three buildings across the border and turning them into a school and clinic for Casa de Todos. He was also active in the Presbyterian 'Mariners' organization for over 50 years and served (along with Nancy) at the National level as Stewards of the 1963 Convention held here in San Diego.
Tom was fun-loving, a 'packrat', a Star Trekee, a John Wayne fan, a Republican, and a Mason (El Cajon), and loved puzzles. He was an 'Engineer' who could fix anything and do anything. He was a family man wearing out two motor homes taking his family all over the U.S.
He loved God, his family, and his country and his spirit and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. Tom was born into eternal life in March, 2007. His life will be celebrated at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3902 Kenwood Drive, Spring Valley, on Saturday, April 7, 2007, at 2 p.m. In honor of his many, many Saturday 'work parties' the family is inviting everyone to dress casually and bring work gloves to help plant a tree and vine in his memory. A reception will be held in Williams Hall following the plantings. There will be no graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Tom to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3902 Kenwood Drive, Spring Valley, CA 91977, designated for the Building and Grounds Committee OR Meadowview, RCFE, 1341-A South Boyle Avenue, Escondido, CA 92027, designated for the bathroom remodel project.
