     Gilbert C. Small Jr. was born on 21 March 1917 at Belmont, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1,2,3 He was the son of Gilbert C. Small and Christine Schoff.1 Gilbert C. Small Jr. married, at age 24, Marylen Hill, age 22 on Saturday, 28 February 1942 at Natick, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1,3,4 Gilbert C. Small Jr. died on 13 March 2005 at Emerson Hospital, Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 87 years, 11 months and 20 days.1,2,3
     He appeared on the census of 14 January 1920 in the household of Gilbert C. Small and Christine Schoff at Belmont, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Gilbert C. Small Jr. graduated in 1938 from Dartmouth University, located in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, receiving a bachelor's degree.3 He graduated in 1940 Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, receiving a master's degree.3 As of between 1942 and 1945, Gilbert C. Small Jr. was known as Major professionally.3 He was in military service with the United States Marine Corps between 1942 and 1945 as a forward observer with the 1st Marine Division Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, United Kingdom.3,4 He was graduated in 1949 from Harvard University, located in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.3 He retired in 1987. His obituary was published on 15 March 2005 in the The Boston Globe, printed in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. His obituary stated:

     SMALL, Dr. Gilbert Jr. - Of Wayland, a retired staff analyst in the Office for Information Technology of Harvard University and a former organic chemist, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 in Emerson Hospital, Concord. He was 87 years old.

     Dr. Small was born in Belmont, MA and lived in Wayland from the age of two. He attended Dartmouth University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1938 and a master's degree in 1940. In 1949 he graduated from Harvard University with a doctorate in organic chemistry.

     During World War II, he was a Major in the US Marine Corps. As a member of the 1st Marine Division, he was a forward observer during the first American offensive of the war at Guadalcanal.

     Dr. Small was employed as an organic chemistry researcher throughout the 50's and 60's at Cryovac Corporation in Woburn, Ludlow Corporation in Needham and Weyerhauser Company in Fitchburg. In 1969, he was hired by Harvard University as a systems analyst in the computing center. He retired in 1987.

     He leaves his wife, Marylen; two sons, Bradford of Austin, TX and Jonathan of Middletown, RI; a daughter, Gretchen of Ontario, Canada and four grandchildren.

     Services will be on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the First Parish Unitarian Church, corners Route 20 and Route 27, Wayland centre. Arrangements under the direction of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Wayland.3
According to the Social Security Administrations Death Index Gilbert's last known residence was Wayland, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.2
