Eleanor Vatcher1,2

     Eleanor Vatcher was born on 22 July 1915 at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.1,2 She was the daughter of Samuel P. Vatcher and Hazel Phillips.1 Eleanor Vatcher married John William Haigis Jr., son of John William Haigis and Rose Grace Luippold, in 1948.1 Eleanor Vatcher died on 5 January 2008 at Buckley Health Care Center, Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, at age 92 years, 5 months and 14 days.1,2 A memorial service for Eleanor Vatcher was held Second Congregational Church, Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, on 10 January 2008 at 3 p.m.. Following the service there will by a reception at Hope and Olive restaurant at 4.1
     She was widowed at age 73 by the death of John on 27 October 1988.3,1 Her obituary was published on 8 January 2008 in the The Recorder, printed in Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts. Her obituary stated:

     GREENFIELD -- Eleanor "Nan" Haigis died Saturday (1-05-08) at the Buckley Health Care Center in Greenfield, where she had been a resident since 2005. She was 92 years old. Except for being stricken with Alzheimer's and two broken hips, she was blessed with good health throughout her life. She always fully appreciated how blessed she was and her friends and family were likewise blessed to be a part of her love of life.

     Born in Lynn to Samuel P. and Hazel (Phillips) Vatcher, Nan grew up in Bellerose, Long Island, where she attended local schools along with the Cathedral School of St. Mary in Garden City and then the Scudder Collver School in New York City, where she studied interior decorating. She then went to work for the W&J Sloane Co. and the Haire Publishing Co. in New York City.

     She moved to Greenfield when she married John W. Haigis Jr. in 1948. He predeceased her in 1988.

     She was devoted to her family and was active in many community organizations. Nan was a trustee of the Green River Cemetery Association and on the board of the Church Street Home. She was formerly active with the Board of Organized Work at the Franklin Medical Center where she helped with the gift shop and was also involved with the Greenfield Visiting Nurse Association and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

     She had fun traveling, especially later in her life, and took wonderful trips with her friends. She also enjoyed gardening, theater, sewing, interior decorating and playing bridge.

     Nan was a member of the Second Congregational Church in Greenfield.

     She leaves dear friends and her immediate family: her children, Ann Banash of Gill and son-in-law, Dennis; Maggie Haigis of Bernardston; John Haigis of Philadelphia and daughter-in-law Jan; her grandchildren, Christopher Sexton of Bernardston and his wife Melissa, Scott Frost and Erik Frost and a niece with whom she shared a lifelong special relationship, Roxanne Curley of Marion, Mass.

     Her brother, Robert, died in 1944.

     A celebration of her life will be held at the Second Congregational Church in Greenfield Thursday afternoon at 3 followed by a reception at Hope and Olive restaurant at 4. There will be calling hours in the church parlor from 2 to 3 p.m.

     In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Pastoral Counseling Center, 116 Federal St., Greenfield, MA 01301.1
